Tala-Kithimani Village is located in Machakos District, Kenya, about 60 km. East of Nairobi. It covers a geographical area of about 20 Km2 with an estimated population of about 6,000 which is steadily growing. The area is classified as semi-dry with an annual rainfall of 67 mm. The majority of the people survive and live from sub-sistence farming, casual labour, stone mining and self employment in small businesses. Unemployment is high and households survive on as little as US$ 30 per month while small businesses can earn as much as US$ 200-300 per month, depending on the nature of work. The people usually spend their hard earned money on their basic needs, food, water, fuel, rent, medicines, clothes and transportation.
